same height as the transmission–this
ultra-compact unit delivers the

car demands. Innovative side
intake/exhaust ports feature 30%
more intake area for greatly reduced
intake-flow resistance. And a
3-stage intake system and
drive-by-wire throttle further boost
output to levels unmatched in a
normally-aspirated power plant. It
all adds up to fuel-efficiency and
emissions that are substantially
better than any previous rotary

The ultra-compact RENESIS
engine and its low, rearward
mounting are key to the advanced
front midship layout and Mazda
RX-8’s near-perfect 50:50 weight
distribution. In combination with an
extremely low yaw inertia moment,
rigid Power Plant Frame, lightweight
one-piece propeller shaft and
straight-line powertrain layout,
this gives the Mazda RX-8 stunningly
responsive handling, free from
unwanted vibration and harshness. |

The 6-speed manual
version is equipped with a
short-throw, close-ratio gearbox
with carefully chosen gear ratios to
keep the engine firmly in its
maximum power band for a truly
exhilarating drive. |
Lightweight, high-rigidity body
delivers unrivalled handling
Advanced engineering
techniques allowed construction of a
light, highly rigid body. A unique
high-mount backbone frame running
the length of the body and
strategically-placed reinforcements
virtually eliminate twisting and
flexing. The newly-developed
suspension system features Mazda’s
unique in-wheel double wishbone
layout at the front, and a
multi-link (five links per side)
design at the rear, to deliver
unrivalled handling. Electric power
